A Brand New Day

At 7am this morning there was great activity in our house martins' nest. The devoted parents were swinging on the light cord beneath the nest with chirruping cries of encouragement to entice the youngsters out. First one entrepid fledgling tottered on the nest rim, wings aflutter. He(she) opened its' mouth in a wide astonished O as it took to the air. A delighted parent followed its' progress along the house length as the other parent stirred the other 5 baby birds into taking action. First one, then another, and another until there was just one little fat infant left. Its' siblings swooped and cried with delight as they all took wing; each revelling in new freedom. Little timid eventually stood up in the nest; shook itself and stretched as if, 'I can do this', and then it leapt and soared up into the vivid blue of our Cyprus sky.
I stood and watched and marvelled. This is what life is all about. Simplicity, beauty and freedom.
